VMI vs. The Citadel

August 26, 2005

Citadel Escapes with 2-1 Victory Over VMI

Great Game. Exciting Game. Aggressive Game.

The Keydets opened their season with a heartbreaking loss to the Citadel in front of a large, cheering crowd of their fellow cadets. In the hard fought battle VMI outshot the Citadel 20-11, but had difficulty finding the back of the net. The Citadel had a higher foul ratio in this very physical match, and 5 yellow cards were issued, 2 to VMI and 3 to the Citadel. The Citadel’s Emily Haller received two yellow cards and was ejected from the game in the 77th minute.

The Citadel scored two goals in the first half while VMI was unable to find the back of the net, despite some very close attempts. Early in the game Alexa Bernas took a shot, after beating the keeper, that seemed destined to put the team on the scoreboard, but a last minute save by a Citadel defender denied the Keydets the opening score.

Beginning the second half with a 2-0 deficit, the Keydets came roaring back to dominate the half. Most of the play for the second half occurred on the Bulldog’s defensive end as the Keydets retained possession for a greater part of the half, and dominated the field. The Citadel only had two shots on goal in the second half, to VMI’s 12 shots, unfortunately the Keydets were only able to finish one, a header by Gia Bichara from a ball deflected by the Citadel Keeper off of a shot that came from Colleen Redmond, and the score ended up 2-1 with a victory to the Bulldogs.
