GAME SUMMARIES
Spring 2005
Coach Freakley's Comments on the Radford Scrimmage
“We played well for about 70 minutes. We were organized going into the game and I really felt like the guys had an understanding of what we needed to do. We scored two great goals. One from a counter attack and another from a restart. We defended well and worked for one another. Our disadvantage was numbers. We have had one sub all spring and not being able to have fresh legs hurt us in the end of the match. Fitness was suspect and in the end Radford was able to score three goals on us. For the coaching staff it gave us a great look at what the players this spring were capable of doing. Evaluation was a major goal of mine this spring not only to see team strengths and weaknesses, but also just to learn about how individuals do under pressure. Our sights are now on preparing for the summer and fall.”
Women's Spring Season Draws to a Close
April 22, the VMI Women's Soccer team played in a 7v7 Round Robin Friendly at Emory University. VMI started off by beating Gilford College 2-0. Vanessa Berrios scored the first goal off of a free kick at about the half line. Erin Squires slid the final goal in past the keeper after a quick build from the back. The second game was verse the home team, Emory. Emory put up a good fight, but VMI finally found the goal shortly into the second half after many numerous close chances and took a 1-0 lead. Emory, however, answered with less than 2 minutes remaining to tie the game at 1-1 (some may argue that there was a missed off sides call by the ref though... tough luck). Next, VMI faced USC Aiken. VMI quickly put this team away and beat them by numerous goals. Our final game, back to back with the USC Aiken's game, was against a club team. With most of the game played at a 1-1 tie, the club team came out on top by putting in one more goal. Overall, the weekend was a success. With this conclusion to the spring season, the women's soccer team heads into summer training with great enthusiasm for the fall.

Keydets Gain Valuable Experience at Liberty
The VMI Men's Soccer Team played at Liberty Tuesday night (April 11th) giving the coaches their first chance to see the team under pressure against a conference opponent. Liberty outscored the Keydets 2-0 in the first half, but the teams battled to a scoreless draw in the second period.
Coach Freakley's words: “It gave the young guys a great chance to get a lot of minutes due to our small squad for the spring. We are doing some different things that always take time to register and become habit. I know with time, commitment and energy we will only go forward and find our "style" so to speak.
VMI Goes 3-0 at Eastern Mennonite Round Robin
The VMI Men's Soccer Team won all three of it's games at Eastern Mennonite on Saturday April 8th, defeating a club team from JMU, Bridgewater College (Coached by former VMI coach Nino Altemonte), and Eastern Mennonite. The score of all three games was 2-0. We're sorry we don't have a more detailed recap of the games, but we do have these photos we took at the start of the JMU game, just before we took off for the women's tourney at Bridgewater.

Keydets Shine on a Rainy Day
The VMI Women's Soccer Team traveled to Bridgewater College on Saturday April 8th to participate in the Bridgewater College 7-a-side tourney. The Keydets used excellent short game skills to dominate their competition, defeating Shenandoah 7-0, Emory & Henry 4-0, and Bridgewater 6-0. (All scores are approximate. They were scoring so many goals it was tough to keep track.)

Karen
Bill opened things up early in the first game with this shot that the
keeper had no chance of touching until walking to the back of the
net. After that Megan Strand and Anastasia Kovarik seemed to score
every few minutes.

Celine
Ziobro scored a pair of goals in the second game against Emory &
Henry.

The
new Lean and Mean Jessica Rheinlander made this great save against
E&H. JR recorded three shutouts, but to be honest, great
defensive play from Vanessa Berrios and the rest of the Keydet
defense kept JR from having to work very hard.

Heavy
rain in the final game brought out the coats but didn't dampen the
Keydets enthusiasm. However, the rain did eventually force
cancellation of the planned elimination tourney that was scheduled to
begin after the three game qualifier. Too bad. The Keydets were well
on their way to a championship.

Coaches are Pleased with Teams Performance at Navy

There
was a lot of action but very few shots at either end of the field
when VMI squared off against Navy on Saturday April 1st in
Annapolis in a spring scrimmage game. The teams played three 30
minute periods on a day of sunshine, rain and wind, and some really
neat clouds. Fortunately, the rain was brief and fell mostly during
intermission. Navy outscored VMI 2-1 with Mike Lloyd scoring for the
Keydets after challenging the Navy keeper for a free ball on the
ground out near the eighteen yard line. Mike managed to punch the
ball past/through the keeper and into the net.
With several Keydets studying abroad this Spring and injuries/etc., the Keydets made the trip to the Naval Academy with only twelve players. As the players rotated around the field, we saw many of them playing in new positions. Everyone got a good dose of training.
After the game, Coach Freakley commented, “While we are not happy with the result, we are happy with the team applying the things we have been working on.”
