May 25th - JSU Names Julie Davis New Head Soccer Coach

May 25thTHANK YOU JULIE – Mission Accomplished

Once every true blue moon, God graces VMI with a truly great coach. One with an assignment so daunting that few sane individuals would dare attempt the mission. In the early 70's, it was Bob Thalman, who was called to start rebuilding an athletic department that had been ravaged by the Vietnam War. It took him only a few short years to bring the VMI football program to championship class in the Southern Conference. Bob was followed by Bill Blair, who led the basketball program into the national spotlight, whose highlight was a moment in the second half, against a strong University of Kentucky, when the national TV audience was thinking, “wow, these guys from Lexington might be going to the Final Four.”

The new millineum brought new challenges to the VMI athletic department. A new athletic program needed to be built from scratch, a daunting task for any individual at any NCAA Division I school. The state of the Institute at that time made this task even more incredible. This time, God sent an Angel named Julianna. She started with a handful of students playing at the club level. She began recruiting, and slowly brought in some truly talented athletes. The program began competing at the Division I level with great success. But her successes were not limited to the playing field or the won/loss column. Her greatest accomplishment occurred in barracks. Today, VMI stands poised to excel in women's athletics.

As is the case with all great coaches that rgace VMI with their presence, her stay was only temporary. Our Angel has been called to Jacksonville State University for her next assignment, whatever that may be. We wish her luck and thank her for her accomplishments. While she may reside in Alabama, her presence will be felt in Lexington for many years to come. Thank you Julie. Mission Accomplished. Thank You.
