July 22nd Fun at the Beach

(l to r) Josh Hanna '08, Jason Seagle '01, Edward Mills '07 at the Summer 2005 Kick It 3v3 tournament at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach. Jason, who was a member of the Keydet coaching staff last year,  is now located in the outerbanks doing personal training and coaching a U-16 Team.  He brought his team to the beach for a very hot weekend of soccer and was in need of a few more players so he called on current Keydet's to help him out.  If anyone has other summer pictures to share please send them on and we will post them.

Re: VMI Soccer

I am the class of 63.  Our coach that year was one of the players.  We
were feared by opposing teams.  Unfortunately it was not because of our
skill.  Rather it was our lack thereof so that it was often the only time
they would wear shin guards since in our enthusiasm( which was great) we
too frequently missed the ball in our attempt to steal it.  I had never
played soccer before and many others were the same.  I wish that I had.  I
played only one season and was on the track team for all four years and
devoted myself to that.

I wish you all well in your play and in your experience at The Institute.
While it is not the perfection you often hear it will likely grow on you
in coming years and rightly so.  Take from your individual experience
what it has to offer to you and you will likely be the better for it.
Practice hard and play with joy which will give you a lifetime of
memories.

July 4th Women's Soccer Team Receives Huge Gift

The VMI Alumni Review has reported that Charlotte and Gil Minor '63 have established the first endowed scholarship for the VMI Women's Soccer Team. This scholarship will be used each year to provide the equivalent of one out of state scholarship. Any additional income available in a given year will be available to any VMI women's intercollegiate athletic program for operating expenses or scholarships, as directed by the athletic director.

See the Spring 2005 Alumni Review for more details and an excellent article about the Minors and their love for VMI.
