April 5th: Alumni Battles Varsity to 0-0 Tie
That is until the old guys ran out of steam midway through the second half. The young guys put in a few goals as time wound down as the alumni watched from their offensive end of the field. Johnny Weekes played an outstanding first half in goal for the Alumni, then ended up standing out in the second half after popping a hamstring playing in the field. No other major injuries were reported, but there were definitely some sore muscles (and heads) Sunday morning.

Alumni Game 2008
I wasn’t able to make it back for the alumni game in time to see any of it but it sounds like the old guys let Kevin Aldridge and Parker Thurman do most of the work and focused on numbers behind the ball! In other words there weren’t many runs forward! It was easy to tell after I got to Moody Hall and met everyone that they had all had a great time and were really appreciative for Coach Freakley’s efforts to make this all happen. I thoroughly enjoyed catching up with everyone and wish there had been more time to spend with each person . Hearing how lives are going now is one of the great things about coaching and I truly value hearing back from everyone. We all know that VMI challenges everyone, not just cadets and I have many wonderful memories of those challenges, and some not so wonderful ones as well!
One particular game came to mind and we all shared a bit about how we remembered that game.. How many of you remember the Citadel game at Citadel the year we played through 3 weather patterns? It was raining so hard at the start that we stayed in the vans waiting to see if their team was going to show up! I had been told ahead of time that their corps was coming to the game because our corps had come to the last years game and we had simply kicked butt! The rain let up very little and we took the field for warm-ups and found out right away standing water over 50% of the pitch wasn’t going to make a possession game possible! We played very direct and sent balls long early and as memory serves Jimmy Dameron scored from the right side about 35 yards out in the first 5 minutes of the game…that ended their corps support real fast as their cadets headed back in for dryer places! We played well early and went up 2-0 as best I recall but things changed after that…eventually we were down 4-2 or 4-3 and had played through more rain, cold and even heat! I can remember freezing at one point taking off a jacket at another point because it got hot! I will never forget Mike Young on a run down the right side in front of the benches, taking a 50/50 ball and making it all his, inspiring our whole bench and team as he kicked in another gear, serving a great ball and Trey Kirby finishing it off to tie the game at 4 with only seconds left in regulation. We went on to win 5-4 in probably one of the greatest games I was ever a part of.
Send me your memory of this game or another and I’ll share! My thanks to all of you for the many good memories!

We are looking for Alumni who
would like to share their experiences with VMI. It doesn't need to be about
soccer. We like to think that we are building a history book of cadet life to
leave behind for future generations.

What happened to JR?
For those of you who may be wondering what happened to JR, she will not be able to play this year due to hip surgery this past summer to repair a torn pelvic ligament doctors believe occurred during her Rat season. After pushing through the pain the next two seasons and physical therapy bringing no relief, she finally decided to have the surgery in July as the pain and ligament/muscle weakness was just too intense to continue to play at the level she did before. For those who did know, many thanks for your thoughts and words of encouragement then and now as she continues to grind out rehab over the next several months. Pam and I enjoyed our camaraderie with other parents as we supported the evolution of Women's Soccer at VMI. Good luck to the team this season. Tom Rheinlander
The Friends of VMI Soccer would like to thank Pam and Tom for the many photos they provided the past few years. Pam really knows how to work a camera. They will be missed. If anyone is interested in helping out with photos, please contact Mack Tabb webmaster@friendsofvmisoccer.com
The Friends of VMI Soccer offer a great big THANK YOU! To Emily Mills for all of the hard work she put forth toward this website, the parents, and the team. Her efforts greatly enhanced the pleasure of being a VMI Soccer fan and she will be surely missed.

From Coach Ben Freakley (Following the win over Gardner-Webb):
Chemistry and consistency are the focus. With 11 freshmen on the team and 14 returning players, we have many goals for the team. Getting them to know one another on and off the field is essential to success and will remain as a priority this year. Attitudes have be excellent and work rate has matched attitudes. The players want to train hard and have been competing in every game and training session for time. We have been very pleased with the freshmen. They have raised the level of our program and have pushed the returning players harder in return. It is good for everyone when there is daily competition for playing time.
We scheduled a very tough begining of the season in pre-season games with Richmond and George Washington. We then followed up with an away tournament to start the season with Georgia Southern University and Appalachian State University. Both had good seasons last year and challenged us. Results were poor in those games, but we had plenty of moments of good soccer. After the weekend I remained optimistic despite the losses.
Wednesday was our day. After losing to Gardner-Webb last year 4-0, I believed we truly were ready to get the result. In practice the day before every player was giving a fantastic attitude and the mood of the team was anxious and ready to play. After being tied 1-1 at the half and going down 2-1 early in the second the boys scrapped back and got in several times and made their chances count. 4-2 was the final result and it was well earned. That gave us a great deal of confidence as we look to play Howard next week.
Recruiting is going well as we have already had three young men commit to us for 2008. This weekend and next weekend we will have Region Team players from ODP on visits. Both of these young men are very special players that we will work very hard to get.
I think it is important to add that our two captains John Sollock and Barrett Luxhoj have done a good job of providing the right leadership for these team. Their energy and ideas for the program add something special and help build on the chemistry I think is so very important to our success.
Regards,
Ben
